How do I use my Public folder?
Your Public folder allows you to move selected files to a location within My Docs Online where the files can be "served" to any user's browser using a file-specific URL. URLs pointing to files in your Public folder can be used in web pages, copied into your emails or other documents, etc.
To use this feature follow these steps:
- If you don't have a Public folder, create one.
Login to your account and look at the list of folders at the left of the screen. If you don't see one named Public/, click the red New Folder button and create a folder named Public with My Files/ as the Destination.
- Move a file you have already uploaded into the Public folder by selecting it, clicking Move, and selecting Public/ as the Destination. To get a file into the Public folder you will always have to first upload it to another folder (like My Files/) and then move it. This is to avoid inadvertently uploading a sensitive file into a location where it might be seen by the wrong person. Duplicate file names are not allowed in the Public folder.
- In the Public folder, select a file with its checkbox and click Details.
The sixth line of detail ("Link:") shows the file's URL. File URLs are always in the form:
http://www.mydocsonline.com/pub/user-id/filename where user-id is replaced by your My Docs Online login ID and filename is replaced by the name of the specific file.
You can highlight and copy this link to use in emails, on web pages, etc. Try pasting it into your browser's Address field to see how it works.
If you have an older-style My Docs Online ID containing a blank, go to "My Account" and change your ID to one that contains no blanks. Also, although the Public folder does support filenames that contain blanks, URLs require replacing blanks with "%20" which results in longer, less user-friendly URLs. You can avoid this by renaming files destined for the Public folder so that they do not contain blanks.
How can I backup Outlook 2000 or Outlook XP data to My Docs Online?
The first step is to locate and copy your Personal Folder (.pst) file:
- Open Outlook.
- Find the location where the Personal Folder (.pst) file is kept on your system. To do so, right-click Outlook Today on the shortcut menu and select Properties.
- Click Advanced. Look at the Path field and make a note of the location of the PST file. This path may vary from system to system.
- Click Cancel twice to close the dialog boxes.
- Go to the File menu and click Exit to quit Outlook. Closing Outlook also "closes" the PST file to avoid problems with copying the file.
- Open the folder containing the PST file and locate the PST file.
- Make a copy of the file. You can do so by right-clicking the file and selecting Copy. Then Paste the file into a location where you can easily locate it. If you are unsure where to paste the file just copy it into your My Documents folder.
The second step is to upload the copied PST file into your My Docs Online account. Because PST files tend to be quite large we recommend using the My Docs Online Upload Manager to upload the file. (If you don’t already have the upload manager installed you can
download it).
- Open the My Docs Online Upload Manager.
- Locate your .PST file in the folder you copied it into and select it for uploading.
- Click the start upload button.
- Enter your My Docs Online login information.
- Select the folder where you would like to store the copy of your .PST file.
- Upload the file.
I can't upload large files. Why, and what can I do?
If you can only upload small files to your My Docs Online account, but larger files fail particularly if the problem only shows up at work, it may be because there is a filtering product in action at your location. Try setting your account to use the SSL option to encrypt your file uploads. To do so log in, click "My Account", scroll to the "Session Encryption" section, click the "Use SSL" radio button, and click "Update". After you log out and log in again to establish a secure session, try uploading your large file.
If you are having trouble uploading a large file because of a slow connection, or because of intermittant network problems, and if you use Windows, you can also use the My Docs Online Upload Manager client, which can restart a partial upload.

You can use virtually any Internet-ready phone to access your files to deliver them to any email recipient as an attachment. With our optional fax package you can also fax a file to any North American fax machine.
For more details see our SmartPhone page.
Why is using My Docs Online better than using e-mail attachments?
Email attachments, once the most common tool for ad hoc file distribution, no longer work in many cases.
The reasons email is no longer appropriate for file delivery include:
- ISP file size limitations Whether imposed by your ISP or your recipient's ISP. AOL, for instance, limits
attachments to 1MB. Anything bigger will simply never arrive.
- Sending someone a big file in an email is bad form. a 1 megabyte download can take several minutes when your
recipient checks his or her email. They may wonder what is going on, or they may simply be in a hurry and you are
slowing them down.
- The problem multiplies. When you are sending the same file to many people the problem gets worse.
- You can also use Follow That FileTM to track whether your
recipients have downloaded or deleted your file.
What are the Terms of Use?
You can review the User Agreement.
What about HIPAA Compliance?
See our HIPAA Compliance statement (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).
I'm entering my Password correctly and still getting an error.
What do I do?
Some older browsers have problems with the JavaScript we use on our normal Login Screen. Try
using the simpler, non-JavaScript version,
login.html.
I enter the correct ID and Password but all I get is a blank screen. How do I fix that?
In Internet Explorer, click Tools...Internet Options, then click the Security tab, select the Internet Zone, and click the Custom Level button. Scroll to the "Miscellaneous" section and Enable "Allow META REFRESH". Click OK.
I am a MacIntosh user. Can I use My Docs Online?
Yes, the Web interface works the same regardless of the OS you are using. You can also use the WebDAV support built into OS X or WebDAV clients like Goliath, which supports MacOS 8.1 or higher.
When configuring a WebDAV or Web Folder connection, the server address for My Docs Online is http://webfolders.mydocsonline.com. If your Enterprise Group security setting specifies the use of SSL for all connections, the address must be https://webfolders.mydocsonline.com.
For details on how to configure WebDAV for various operating systems, see the WebDAV/Web Folders page.
TeamDrive is having trouble connecting and I use ZoneAlarm. How can I make the two work together?
ZoneAlarm by default stops outbound connections to servers like My Docs Online from client programs like TeamDrive. To configure ZoneAlarm to allow TeamDrive to connect, open ZoneAlarm and select "Custom Rules" and add a custom rule to allow a specific connection to "webfolders.mydocsonline.com".
What about my WebTV browser?
For browsers not capable of using JavaScript there is an alternative login screen,
login.html. This login page also contains fewer
graphics.
How do I upload a file?
- In the browser interface click on the "Upload File" button at the top left of the file list screen and
My Docs Online will walk you through the upload process for 1 to 5 files per upload.
- Using Web Folders or a WebDAV client treat your My Docs Online "folder" or "drive letter" as you would any other
folder, using drag-and-drop or copy/paste.
- Windows users can also upload whole folders, subfolders, and files using the My Docs Online
Upload Manager.
How do I download a file?
In the browser interface select the folder by clicking the link in the folder list on the left, then
click the filename. Some file types will load in the browser (text files, GIFs, etc), or launch the
appropriate application. Others will pop up a File Download dialog. If you wish to download the file
without first opening it in your browser you can right-click the file name (on a Mac use Control-click)
and then use "save target as" (or "save file as" depending on your browser) in the context menu that
will pop up.
Using Web Folders or a WebDAV client allows you to drag-and-drop or copy/paste files from your My Docs Online
window to other desktop folders.
How do I give files to others?
To Give Files to Others, check the box next to the file or files you want to share, then click the "Give"
button at the top of the screen. The final step is to enter the e-mail addresses of the people you wish to
give the file to and click the "Done" button. My Docs Online will send an e-mail notification to alert your
recipient(s) that the file is waiting for them at My Docs Online. For users who do not have a My Docs Online
account, the e-mail message will include a link that will take the recipient directly to My Docs Online,
where they can browse or download your file(s). My Docs Online users will be notified that the files are
available in their "Files from Others" section.
Recipients will only have access to the file(s) you give and they will not see any of your other files. NOTE: When you Give a file to someone, they get their own "copy". Deleting your copy WILL NOT delete the copy you have already given. Updating your copy of the file WILL NOT update the copy you have given.
If you need the ability to update or "take back" a file you are sharing with others, consider using your Public Folder.
Can I give files to people who may not be
My Docs Online users?
All you need to know to give a file to a friend or colleague is their e-mail address.
How do I delete a file?
Check the box next to the file or files you want to delete, then click the Delete button at the top of the file
list screen. You'll be taken to a delete confirmation page listing the file(s) to be deleted.

button at the top of the file list screen. The details section will show you any comments associated with the file as
well as any Follow that File information that may be available. You can also rename the file and
change the comment if desired.
I've downloaded a file and I can't find it. Where is the file?
When downloading a file, if you fail to specify a drive and folder, your browser or application
may direct your file to a default location. When downloading a file, it is important to specify
where the file is to be saved. We recommend the My Documents folder in Windows or the Desktop
on the Mac. If you're having trouble locating the files, you can use the "Find"
command in Windows or switch to the Finder on the Mac.
How do I retrieve my password if forgotten?
For security reasons, no one can retrieve your password. It is encrypted and safely stored on
the My Docs Online private network servers. If you used "My Account" to set a password hint
you can retrieve your hint by entering your User ID at the My Docs Online login screen, then clicking the Log In button. The resulting screen will include a button "I've forgotten My Password". address.

Click here for My Docs Online file security info.
I'm getting a message saying the account ID I am using is already
logged on. What does this mean?
My Docs Online limits the number of simultaneous accesses available to an individual ID. To
help minimize this problem please log-out when you are through using My Docs Online. If you
feel you are getting this message in error please contact
My Docs Online Support.
What are Web Folders and WebDAV?
"Web Folders" is what Microsoft calls its WebDAV support, which is built into modern Windows operating systems.
WebDAV is an open Internet standard that allows clients on your PC or Mac to access files and folders on a server
in much the same way as on the desktop, while actually residing on a remote server accessed via the Web
in this case the server is My Docs Online
What operating systems support Web Folders and WebDAV?
Web Folders are supported on Windows 98/2000/NT/ME/XP.
Mac OS X supports WebDAV, Goliath is available for MacOS 8.1 or higher,
and a variety of clients support WebDAV, including Adobe GoLive, Macromedia Dreamweaver,
and WebDrive.
How are Web Folders used with My Docs Online?
Web Folders offer an alternative way of accessing your My Docs Online account and
its files. Functionality supported in My Docs Online using Web Folders and WebDAV includes:
- Integration with your desktop
- Drag-and-Drop of folders and files between your computer's harddrive and My Docs
Online
- Multiple file and folder uploads and downloads
- No need to use your browser to access your My Docs Online account and files
Web Folder support is completely integrated into My Docs Online so
you can still use browser-based access when you need to, and both methods use the same
ID and Password
Are there any problems accessing Web Folders from behind a proxy server?
Yes, in some cases there are problems accessing Web Folders from behind a proxy server. The Web
Folders feature uses the WebDAV protocol for communications between your computer and the
My Docs Online servers. The WebDAV protocol is fully supported by proxy servers that are HTTP 1.1
compliant. HTTP 1.0 proxy servers may not support WebDAV. For a partial list of proxy servers
supporting HTTP 1.1 and WebDAV visit the official WebDAV site at
www.webdav.org/other/proxy.html
I use My Docs Online from outside the United States
and I'm having trouble connecting to WebFolders, is there another URL that might work better?
Many Non-US ISPs filter their traffic through a proxy server that blocks Web Folders traffic.
Many international My Docs Online users have had success configuring a My Docs Online Web
Folder using http://webfolders.mydocsonline.com:8080. The 8080 at the end is a port number
that many proxy servers will allow Web Folders traffic through.
When I use the Cookie Cop proxy Web Folders won't work. Can they work together?
Cookie Cop Plus 1.2 or later reportedly works with Web Folders. Make certain you have the latest version.
